Ready for a New Look for Fall?

There’s a nip in the air and the leaves are starting to change, sure signs of fall’s approach. As we say goodbye to summer clothes and sandy beach bags, it’s time to consider a new season for our hair. We talked to Robert Sugden, hair artist in Sawgrass Village, Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, about fall hair care, the trends he’s seeing and styling, and the four Leonor Greyl products he always has in his bag.

Taking care of post-summer hair

After a season of sun, salt water, and chlorine, Robert recommends a regular regimen of a Leonor Greyl mask and pre-shampoo oil to restore and maintain your hair’s integrity, no matter how you color and style it.

“I recommend my clients use L’Huile de Leonor Greyl every time they shampoo, and do a mask once a week. For people who are doing a lot of color, especially blonds who are bleaching, Masque Quintessence is one of my favorites. Or, depending on your hair type, either Masque Fleurs de Jasmin for fine and dry hair or Masque à l’Orchidée for thick, dry, or frizzy hair. Leonor Greyl is a universal line for any hair texture and type, which is one of the things I love about it—it’s for everyone. I have to throw in Shampooing Reviviscence, too. It is one of the gentlest pick-me-ups for hair.” A must-have he recommends for distributing these products in your hair is the Leonor Greyl Detangling Comb.

Four looks for fall

Describing the looks he is styling, Robert says, “I’m seeing clients ask for some very cute cuts for fall—from the classic to the edgy—and a strong interest in redder tones for color. Another big trend right now is soft transitional color, where you don’t know where the color starts and stops. I’m here for all of it!” Here are four on-trend looks to consider now.

French bob

Many of Robert’s clients are embracing a classic French or 90s bob this fall—choppy, shorter, simple, with an edgy vibe. To style it, Robert uses Mousse au Lotus Volumatrice for volume and texture. He loves to spray in Tonique Hydratant for extra hydration, then blows the hair dry and finishes with Serum de Soie Sublimateur and hairspray.

Hershberger shag

The butterfly cut has given way to a dramatic shag sometimes called the Hershberger shag, with “tons of structure around the face and really visible movement,” he says.

“I use a lot of product for this to really amp up the texture. I manipulate the mid to ends with Mousse au Lotus Volumatrice and blow dry. For this style, I avoid too much hydrating because you want texture and rock-and-roll movement. I finish with Éclat Naturel to give it a little grit and movement, and no hair spray.”

Birkin bangs

Birkin bangs, soft, long bangs named after the French actress Jane Birkin, are also making an appearance this fall. Robert styles them “super soft down to the cheekbones, with the eyes peeking out.” He starts with Tonique Hydratant, and won’t use a mousse; he wants flow and not volume. After blow drying the bangs back, he uses Baume Bois de Rose, and strategically places the bangs with his fingers.

Lastly, a fun and elegant fall trend: copper-colored tresses. Robert loves the copper look his clients are requesting, and it is perfect with fall wardrobe colors.

One of his absolute musts for any client that requests a copper color is they have to use Leonor Greyl’s Soin Repigmentant Natural Copper. He enthuses, “It is absolutely amazing. Red color fades drastically; it doesn’t like to stick. The Soin Repigmentant conditioners work like a dream to maintain color. For brunettes and coppers, they are so beneficial to use to keep your color looking rich.”

His bag of Leonor Greyl products

Robert is a huge Leonor Greyl fan, and never leaves home without his four go-to LG products. “Serum de Soie Sublimateur is the best serum I’ve ever used hands down. Every client I have owns it. It’s amazing for flyaways, it is so lightweight, and it does not weigh hair down. It’s my go-to for anybody and everybody—dry, curls, everything.”

Go-to number two is L’Huile de Leonor Greyl. “It’s perfect for prepping clients for any color service. It’s a game-changer for stylists. I use it as an extra to make my clients feel special.”

Robert loves Baume Bois de Rose so much, he uses it on his own hair every day. “I mix it with a little LG oil for my hair, to slick sideburns back, baby hairs, anything that needs some control. It’s so easy to use, not sticky, and my hair doesn’t look greasy or wet, just like normal hair. Phenomenal.”

“The fourth and final one I’m using a lot right now is the new Serum Énergisant for thinning hair. I have used this on clients who have very thin hair, with great results. It’s lightweight and doesn’t weigh hair down. This makes styling thinning hair work really well.”

Fall is always an exciting season of new beginnings—from back-to-school to new looks to cozy, cool-weather wardrobes. Enjoy finding your own “new” for this fall, whether it’s a different color, a bold cut, or even new products to help your hair look its best after a summer of outdoor fun.
